WARRI is proud to offer a continuing research scholarship fund in honour of Professor Anthony H. Winefield, former Director of the Centre for Applied Psychological Research at the University of South Australia and a founding member of WARRI’s research committee.
Professor Tony Winefield was Australia’s most published psychologist, with over 200 publications and 7,500 citations until his passing in March 2020. Above all, he was a great mentor, a humanist who never forgot his roots and always remained committed to helping those most disadvantaged in our community. The grandson of Polish and Romanian migrants growing up in England, Prof. Winefield gained his PhD at University College London. His working class background has provided him with a selfless and generous nature, donating his time to mentor hundreds of students and engaging in several community activities. He was a mad keen Arsenal football fan and was actively involved in the creation of SAMSL, the masters football league in SA and co-invented the rules for “Australian rules volleyball” as a way of fostering life balance and fitness in psychology department staff and friends. He would frequently be heard from the sideline as well as from on court.
Prof. Winefield has worked for many years at the University of Adelaide before joining the University of South Australia in 1999 as Foundation Professor of Psychology. In 1993 he was made a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society and in 2003 he received the Elton Mayo Award from the Australian Psychological Society’s College of Organisational Psychologists for “Outstanding contributions to Industrial/ Organisational Psychology Research and Teaching”.
Amongst Prof. Winefield’s mentees were WARRI’s own research members Prof. Jacques Metzer, Dr. Quentin Black and Prof. Paul Delfabbro. He was also Prof. Helen Winefield’s husband. Prof. Tony Winefield would keep a list of every student he mentored and supervised during his career. He was also known for promoting the University of Adelaide Psychology Department’s annual staff Honours students soccer match. Prof. Winefield also authored a series of fun limericks involving Australian public figures.
